Volcanic Mount Kerinci provides a lush home to our latest single origin—Sumatra Kerinci. Surrounding the mountain is the Kerinci Valley which is known as the “rice bowl” of central Sumatra. A majority of the 300,000 people that reside there rely on agriculture to provide for their families. Sumatra Kerinci comes to us from 150 small farmers who work in the cooperative. As a community, they are able to access global markets to sell their beans at fair prices and continually improve sustainable farming practices. We invite you to experience this exclusive Sumatra roast with us.*
The Sumatra farmers who grow this coffee have been a part of a conservation program led by a local NGO to save the rainforest by growing coffee outside the national park instead of encroaching into the park and increasing livelihood to also discourage poaching into the national park. The NGO birthed a local company that handles the nursery and milling process. So the NGO and company sort of go hand-in-hand and the farmers benefit from assistance and a guaranteed market for their product. Together, the farmers work with Santiang Exports as they help with quality control, better prices, and exporting their coffee. These are smallholder farms, most of them maxing out around one hectare of coffee.**
