Kohana Coffee returns to the Table, this time with their Island Latte Cold Brew—a single origin Honduran cold brew concentrate that is blended with milk and canned.

Las Capucas Honduras

COCAFCAL (Cooperativa Capucas Limitada) is located in western Honduras, in the buffer zone of the Celaque National Park. This amazing nature reserve is a cloud forest containing the country’s highest mountain.

The cooperative represents many coffee farming communities from the municipalities of San Pedro and Corquin, in Copan. Together, they work to promote the sustainable development of their local economy with coffee funds in order to receive financial, technical, productive and marketing services for members and families. Reducing poverty and increasing standards of life for their community are their main objectives.

Their development programs have benefited approximately 5,000 people in Las Capucas and surrounding regions. Members are dedicated to growing sustainable conventional, organic and Fair Trade coffees.*

Welcome to my Table, here in the corner of this cafe. Today we’re sipping the Island Latte Cold Brew, from Kohana Coffee in Austin, Texas. Feel free to pull up a chair.

CUPPINGNOTES:

Cracking open the can of Island Latte, my nostrils are greeted by an incredibly sweet aroma. Loads of sugar and vanilla; not much coffee, though. There’s not even much “generic coffee aroma” to be found.

Unfortunately, the taste follows the nose on this one. Is it tasty? Sure it is. Of course it is. But how could it not be, with the erythitol, twelve grams of sugar, 2% milk, and monk fruit extract? I know the name of this product is “Island Latte Cold Brew” and all, but it tastes more like a can of sugary milk than a latte. The organic cold brew coffee component hardly registers with my taste buds.

What little I do taste from the coffee is nuts, touches of roast, chocolate…

Medium body; creamy mouthfeel; malic acidity; clean finish.

FINALTHOUGHTS:

Kohana Coffee’s Island Latte Cold Brew is a very sweet, tasty concoction, but I don’t at all recommend it for coffee purists (or even coffee lovers, for that matter). It is, however, a tasty treat for enthusiasts who don’t mind a can of sugary milk concoction that has faint traces of coffee and are just looking to switch up their morning jolt delivery mechanism.

It actually tastes a lot like the Starbucks bottled frappuccino (and other big brand bottled “cold brew lattes”), but much better, and probably a little better for you. Still, though (and especially at its price point), there’s just not enough here for me to, in good conscience, recommend this beverage.
